Killzone Shadow Fall Music Production Behind The Scenes

What better way to score a game about the conflict between two distinct factions than to recruit two distinct composers? For Killzone Shadow Fall, Guerrilla Lead Audio Designer Lewis James did exactly that.

In a new behind-the-scenes look at the production of Killzone Shadow Fall’s soundtrack, Lewis explains how internationally renowned musicians Tyler Bates and Lorn each provided half of the game world with a separate and uniquely atmospheric musical identity.

The composers hail from backgrounds almost as different as those of the two factions they were asked to write music for. Tyler Bates, who scored the Vektan parts of the game, is a veteran music producer and composer for films, TV and video games, whose body of work includes 300 (2006), Watchmen (2009), and God of War: Ascension (2013). The Helghast parts of the game were scored by alternative electronic musician Lorn, who recently followed up his critically acclaimed sophomore album Ask The Dust (2012) with a four-track EP titled Debris (2013).

In spite of their different backgrounds and approaches to creating music, both composers had a lot of fun working with Lewis and his team. “When [Lewis] proposed this concept to me I fully trusted that he would wield the process to yield the end result he was looking for. We had a great time working together on this game,” Tyler says. Lorn concurs: They’re an awesome team and it was great to basically be handed the keys to their world.”

For his part, Lewis is highly satisfied with the resulting soundtrack. “It gives an extra dimension to the sense of history and cultural representation of the two sides,” he explains. “It makes their overall identity in the game much deeper and richer, and therefore heightens the sense of conflict between them.”

Keep an eye on GamesRadar for an upcoming interview with Lewis James, Tyler Bates and Lorn.
